Water levels in Georgian Bay are now lower that ever in recorded history and the short term prognosis does not look favourable.
GBA has recently circulated a document outlining the action that GBA has taken and our current plans for action. A copy of this document can be found in the Water Levels section of this web site.
There are both long term and short term components to our action.
In the long term we are calling for our Federal government to work with their US counterpart to return water levels to a historically healthy range. The bottom of this range would see water levels some 18 inches higher than they are today.
We believe that the Canadian government understand this issue and are taking it seriously. Moreover we believe that they have communicated this to the International Joint Commission. We are all waiting with great anticipation for the IJC to release a report to the two Federal governments on what, if anything, they recommend doing about the water levels.
The contents of the IJC report will determine our next steps on more permanent solution.
In the meantime GBA has stepped up its public awareness campaign around this issue. We have conducted several media interviews including those listed below and we have released a YouTube video to more fully explain the issue and our position. A copy of the YouTube video can be accessed through this link.
There will be short term challenges caused by low water. Access to marinas, communal channels and individual properties may all be difficult next season.
GBA has been working with local municipalities, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the Federal government to work out process and rules to enable the continued use and enjoyment of the Georgian Bay shores.
As specific information on issues such as dredging and blasting rules and regulations is updated we will post this information on this web site. In the meantime we encourage you to contact your MNR District Office for information if you think that access to your property will require dredging and/or blasting. The phone numbers for the three MNR offices that service our part of Georgian Bay are: Sudbury – 705-564-7823;
Parry Sound – 705-746-4201; Midhurst – 705-725-7500.
